Until now, you have mostly used the <i>Indikativ<\/i> (the real world). But what if you want to be extremely polite? Or what if you want to talk about things that aren&#8217;t true yet, like <i>&#8220;If I had a million Euros&#8230;&#8221;<\/i>? This is where <b>Konjunktiv II<\/b> comes in.<\/p>\n<p>For an expat, this is a &#8220;social survival&#8221; tool. Using <i>K\u00f6nnten<\/i> (could) instead of <i>Kann<\/i> (can) can change the way people react to you in a bakery, at work, or when talking to your landlord.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color: #2980b9;\">1. The &#8220;Polite&#8221; Modal Verbs<\/h2>\n<p>The most common use of Konjunktiv II is making requests softer. The General Rule: W\u00fcrden + Infinitive<\/h2>\n<p>For almost all other verbs, we don&#8217;t change the verb itself. We use the auxiliary <b>w\u00fcrden<\/b> and put the main verb at the very <b>end<\/b> in its infinitive form.<\/p>\n<div style=\"background-color: #fdf2e9; padding: 15px; border-left: 5px solid #e67e22; margin: 20px 0;\">\n    <b>The Formula:<\/b> [Subject] + [w\u00fcrden] + [other info] + [Infinitive]\n<\/div>\n<p><i>Example:<\/i> &#8220;Ich <b>w\u00fcrde<\/b> gerne mehr Deutsch <b>sprechen<\/b>.&#8221; (I would like to speak more German).<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color: #2980b9;\">3. Unreal Wishes (The &#8220;If&#8221; Sentences)<\/h2>\n<p>When you imagine a reality that doesn&#8217;t exist, you use <b>Wenn<\/b>. Just like in Lesson 15, <i>Wenn<\/i> kicks the verb to the end, but here we use the Konjunktiv II forms.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Wenn ich Zeit <b>h\u00e4tte<\/b>, <b>w\u00fcrde<\/b> ich Sport <b>machen<\/b>.&#8221; (If I had time, I would do sports).<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Wenn ich du <b>w\u00e4re<\/b>, <b>w\u00fcrde<\/b> ich den Job <b>nehmen<\/b>.&#8221; (If I were you, I would take the job).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"color: #2980b9;\">4. Practical Scenarios for the Expat<\/h2>\n<p><b>A. In a Restaurant \/ Caf\u00e9:<\/b><br \/>\n&#8220;Ich <b>h\u00e4tte<\/b> gerne einen Cappuccino, bitte.&#8221; (I&#8217;d like a cappuccino, please).<\/p>\n<p><b>B. Asking for a Favor at Work:<\/b><br \/>\n&#8220;<b>K\u00f6nnten<\/b> Sie mir bitte mit diesem Formular <b>helfen<\/b>?&#8221; (Could you please help me with this form?)<\/p>\n<p><b>C. Making a Suggestion:<\/b><br \/>\n&#8220;Wir <b>k\u00f6nnten<\/b> am Wochenende nach Hamburg <b>fahren<\/b>.&#8221; (We could go to Hamburg on the weekend).<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color: #2980b9;\">5.
