German Two-Part Conjunctions: Advanced Sentence Building for B1 Fluency

Advanced Logic: Two-Part Conjunctions

As you progress in Level B1, you need to express more complex relationships between ideas. Sometimes one “and” or “but” is not enough. You might want to offer alternatives, show a double benefit, or express a double restriction. In German, we use Zweiteilige Konnektoren (Two-Part Connectors) to achieve this.

For an expat, these are incredibly useful in negotiations, explaining your skills during an interview, or even choosing between two apartments. They make your arguments sound structured and professional.

1. The “Big Four” Two-Part Connectors

These are the most common pairs you will use in professional and social German:

Connector Pair Meaning Usage Context
Nicht nur … sondern auch Not only … but also Highlighting two positive facts.
Entweder … oder Either … or Choosing between two alternatives.
Sowohl … als auch Both … and Emphasizing that two things apply.
Weder … noch Neither … nor Rejecting two options.

2. Sentence Structure and Word Order

The beauty of these connectors is that they generally do not change the standard word order (the verb stays in Position 2). You simply place the first part before the first item/idea and the second part before the second item/idea.

  • Nicht nur/Sondern auch: “Ich spreche nicht nur Englisch, sondern auch Deutsch.”
  • Entweder/Oder: “Wir können entweder heute oder morgen arbeiten.”
  • Weder/Noch: “Er hat weder Zeit noch Geld.”

3. Pro Tip: Adding Professional Depth

When writing a CV or an email, “Sowohl … als auch” sounds much more sophisticated than just using “und.”

Example: “Ich habe Erfahrung sowohl im Marketing als auch im Vertrieb.” (I have experience both in marketing and in sales).

4. Practical Scenarios

A. Negotiating a Schedule:
“Wir können uns entweder im Büro oder online treffen.” (We can meet either in the office or online).

B. Describing a Flat:
“Die Wohnung ist nicht nur zentral, sondern auch sehr ruhig.” (The flat is not only central but also very quiet).

C. Expressing Limitations:
“Ich habe weder den Schlüssel noch den Code.” (I have neither the key nor the code).

5. Practice Exercises

A. Fill in the missing part of the connector:

  1. Ich trinke sowohl Kaffee ________ Tee.
  2. Wir können entweder gehen ________ bleiben.
  3. Das Projekt ist nicht nur wichtig, ________ ________ teuer.
  4. Er spricht weder Deutsch ________ Französisch.

B. Translate to German (Using two-part connectors):

  1. She is not only smart but also very helpful.
  2. Either you help me, or I call the boss.
  3. I eat neither meat nor fish.
