German Futur I: How to Express Plans, Promises, and Predictions

Looking Ahead: Futur I (The Future Tense)

In German, if you say “Ich gehe morgen arbeiten,” you are using the Present Tense to talk about the future. This is very common for fixed plans. However, when you want to express a strong intention, make a prediction (like the weather), or make a promise, you need the Futur I. As an expat, you will use this when discussing your career goals or signing official agreements about future actions.

1. The Formula: Werden + Infinitive

To form the future tense, you need the auxiliary verb Werden (to become/will) and the Infinitive (the base form) of your main action. The structure is very similar to the Modal Verbs we learned in Lesson 9.

The Formula: [Subject] + [Conjugated Werden (Pos 2)] + [Info] + [Main Verb (End – Infinitive)]

2. Conjugation of “Werden” (Reminder)

We saw Werden in the Passive lesson, but here it acts as “will”:

Ich werde Wir werden
Du wirst Ihr werdet
Er/Sie/Es wird Sie/sie werden

3. When to use Futur I vs. Präsens

This is a common question for B1 students. Here is the rule of thumb:

Use Präsens (Present) if… Use Futur I (Future) if…
The plan is 100% certain and soon. It’s a vague intention or a wish.
You use a time word (tomorrow, next week). It’s a prediction or a promise.
“Ich fahre morgen nach Berlin.” “Ich werde dich immer lieben.” (Promise)

4. Practical Scenarios

A. Career Goals:
“In zwei Jahren werde ich fließend Deutsch sprechen.” (In two years, I will speak German fluently).

B. Weather & Predictions:
“Morgen wird es regnen.” (Tomorrow it will rain).

C. Making a Promise:
“Ich werde dir bei dem Projekt helfen.” (I will help you with the project).

5. Word Order Check

Remember, the main verb kicks to the very end. If you have a separable verb (like anrufen), it stays together at the end:

“Ich werde dich morgen anrufen.”

6. Practice Exercises

A. Form Futur I sentences from the following elements:

  1. (ich / nächste Woche / umziehen) -> ____________________________
  2. (das Wetter / schön / werden) -> ____________________________
  3. (wir / bald / eine Lösung / finden) -> ____________________________

B. Translate to German (Using Futur I):

  1. I will find a new apartment soon.
  2. He will learn a lot.
  3. They will arrive at 8 PM.
