German Passiv Präteritum: Reporting Past Events and Processes in Professional Contexts
B2 Level: Professional Documentation – Passiv Präteritum
In Level B1, you learned how to say what is being done (Present Passive). Now, in Level B2, you must learn how to report what was done. In a professional German environment, you won’t always say “I finished the report.” Instead, you will often see or hear: “The report was finished” (Der Bericht wurde abgeschlossen). This shifting of focus to the completed task is essential for formal writing and business meetings.
1. The Formula: Wurden + Partizip II
To form the Passive Voice in the past (specifically the Präteritum), we simply change the auxiliary verb werden to its past form wurden. The main verb still stays at the very end in its Partizip II form (the same one you use for Perfekt).
2. Conjugation of “Wurde” (Past of Werden)
This is the engine for reporting past processes. Memorize these forms carefully:
| Ich wurde | Wir wurden |
| Du wurdest | Ihr wurdet |
| Er / Sie / Es wurde | Sie / sie wurden |
3. Active vs. Passiv Präteritum
Compare how the focus shifts from the person to the event in the past:
- Active: “Die Firma gründete das Startup im Jahr 2010.”
(The company founded the startup in 2010). - Passive: “Das Startup wurde im Jahr 2010 gegründet.”
(The startup was founded in 2010).
4. Practical Business Scenarios
A. Reporting Project Milestones:
“Alle Fehler wurden letzte Woche korrigiert.” (All errors were corrected last week).
B. Office Updates:
“Die neue Software wurde gestern auf allen Computern installiert.” (The new software was installed on all computers yesterday).
C. History & General Facts:
“Die Berliner Mauer wurde 1989 geöffnet.” (The Berlin Wall was opened in 1989).
5. Using “Von” (By whom)
Just like in the present passive, if the “who” is important, use von + Dativ:
“Der Vertrag wurde von dem Direktor unterschrieben.” (The contract was signed by the director).
6. Practice Exercises
A. Change these Present Passive sentences into Past Passive (Präteritum):
- Das Haus wird gebaut. -> Das Haus ________ ________.
- Die Briefe werden geschickt. -> Die Briefe ________ ________.
- Ich werde informiert. -> Ich ________ ________.
B. Translate to German (Passiv Präteritum):
- The bill was paid. (Die Rechnung / bezahlen).
- My car was stolen (stehlen -> gestohlen).
- The meeting was cancelled (absagen).
