German Futur II: How to Express Assumptions and Future Completions
B2 Sophistication: Futur II (Future Perfect)
In Level B2, language is not just about facts; it is about speculation and precision. Futur II is used in two main ways:
- Future Completion: Describing an action that will be finished at a specific point in the future (e.g., “By next year, I will have finished my degree”).
- Assumptions about the Past: This is the most common use! It’s when you guess about something that happened (e.g., “He probably lost his keys”).
1. The Formula: Werden + Partizip II + Sein/Haben
To form Futur II, you need three elements. It looks complex, but the word order is very strict:
Example: “Ich werde die Arbeit gemacht haben.” (I will have done the work).
2. Using Futur II for Assumptions (Vermutungen)
This is where you sound like a native. If someone is late, instead of a simple past sentence, you can say:
- “Er wird den Bus verpasst haben.”
(He probably missed the bus / He must have missed the bus). - “Sie wird wohl eingeschlafen sein.”
(She probably fell asleep).
Note: The word “wohl” is often added to emphasize that it is a guess.
3. Using Futur II for Future Completion
Use this when you want to sound very organized about your goals.
- “Bis morgen werde ich den Bericht geschrieben haben.”
(By tomorrow, I will have written the report). - “Bis Ende des Jahres wird er Deutsch gelernt haben.”
(By the end of the year, he will have learned German).
4. Practical Expat Context: Workplace Speculation
Colleague A: “Wo ist der Chef? Er ist nicht im Meeting.”
You (B2 level): “Er wird den Termin wohl vergessen haben.” (He probably forgot the appointment).
Colleague A: “Glaubst du?”
You: “Ja, aber bis heute Abend wird er sich gemeldet haben.” (Yes, but by this evening, he will have checked in/contacted us).
5. Practice Exercises
A. Form a Futur II sentence (Assumption) from these cues:
- Thomas / die Prüfung / bestehen (haben)
-> Thomas ________ die Prüfung ________ ________. - Sie / nach Hause / gehen (sein)
-> Sie ________ wohl nach Hause ________ ________.
B. Translate to German (Future Completion):
- By next week, I will have found a solution. (Bis nächste Woche…)
- By 2027, he will have moved to Germany. (Bis 2027… umziehen / sein).
