German Verbs with Fixed Prepositions: Stop Translating Literally and Speak Naturally
Natural Fluency: Verbs with Fixed Prepositions
One of the biggest challenges for B1 learners is moving away from literal translation. In English, you wait for someone. In Arabic, you wait for (لـ) someone. But in German, if you say “Ich warte für dich,” it’s incorrect. You must say “Ich warte auf dich.”
Every language has these “fixed marriages” between verbs and prepositions. In German, each combination also dictates which case (Akkusativ or Dativ) you must use. Mastering these is what makes the difference between sounding like a student and sounding like a resident.
1. Common Verbs with Akkusativ Prepositions
These verbs are used daily for expressing interests, waiting, or thinking. They almost always trigger the Akkusativ case.
| Verb + Preposition | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Warten auf | Wait for | Ich warte auf den Bus. |
| Denken an | Think about | Er denkt an seine Arbeit. |
| Sich freuen auf | Look forward to | Wir freuen uns auf den Urlaub. |
| Sich interessieren für | To be interested in | Ich interessiere mich für den Job. |
2. Common Verbs with Dativ Prepositions
These verbs often relate to communication or personal states and trigger the Dativ case.
| Verb + Preposition | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Sprechen mit | Talk with | Ich spreche mit dem Chef. |
| Träumen von | Dream of | Sie träumt von einem Haus. |
| Angst haben vor | Be afraid of | Hast du Angst vor der Prüfung? |
| Gratulieren zu | Congratulate on | Ich gratuliere dir zum Geburtstag. |
3. Asking Questions: Worauf vs. Auf wen?
In B1, you must distinguish between asking about a thing or a person.
- About a Thing (Wo + Preposition):
“Worauf wartest du?” (What are you waiting for?) -> “Auf den Bus.” - About a Person (Preposition + Wen/Wem):
“Auf wen wartest du?” (Who are you waiting for?) -> “Auf meinen Freund.”
4. Practical Scenario: At a Job Interview
Interviewer: “Warum interessieren Sie sich für diese Stelle?”
You: “Ich träume von einer Karriere in Deutschland و ich freue mich auf neue Aufgaben.”
Interviewer: “Haben Sie schon mit dem Abteilungsleiter gesprochen?”
5. Practice Exercises
